ABC miniseries Amerika drew a 27.7 rating and 43 share in 13-city overnight viewings, with a 28.6 rating and 43 share from 9 to 11 p.m. EST. NBC movie The Facts of Life Down Under posted 17.8 rating and 27 share in prime time.
London police detained a man who approached a private area at Kensington Palace, home of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. He was not a threat but held for mental welfare concerns. identity not released. It followed another palace incident five days earlier in which a man attacked two officers and was arrested.
A weak system brings a 20 percent chance of showers tonight and 30 percent tomorrow. Tonight falls in the upper 30s with tomorrow's high in the lower 40s as details are continued on Page 12A.

Early this morning a one story brick Bettis Academy building off S C 144 near Graniteville was completely engulfed by flames. Firefighters from County Line GVW and Graniteville Vaucluse Warrenville departments fought the blaze. The site is owned by the Mount Canaan Baptist Association with past use for exercise and karate classes. Cause under investigation. remnants consist of brick walls and smoldering embers. Built by Rev Alexander Bettis in 1881 or 1882 near the Aiken Edgefield boundary.
