Police launch a nationwide search for Lt. Col. B. S. Dimka who authorities say led the abortive coup that killed Chief of State Murtala Mohammed. Dimka, once director of physical training, vanished after the failed uprising by the Young Revolutionaries.
Syrian pressure shifts Moslem and leftist leaders to back reforms aimed at ending Lebanon's civil war. After talks with Abdul Halim Khaddam, some had rejected Syrian sponsored reforms but now align. Palestinian guerrilla groups tone down but vow nonviolent actions while opposing the plan.
Assurances sought in Kinshasa as Marien Ngouabi travels from Brazzaville to mediate between Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire and Agostinho Neto of the MPLA. Mobutu seeks guarantee MPLA will not seize Matadi or threaten Zaire while resuming copper shipments via the Benguela railroad. MPLA, aided by Cuban troops, has taken the rail line.

Concord State Prison began a major cleanup after a riot tied to 60 to 80 inmates. The four hour disturbance caused about 1 million dollars in damage, nearly destroying a dormitory and heavily harming a gym and library. Police and corrections officers secured the site and inmates surrendered peacefully.
