SC utility faces heat over proposed 9.5 percent rate hike

South Carolina Electric & Gas Co faces opposition from businesses and residents over a 9.5 percent electric rate increase to fund environmental upgrades and a Columbia area dam. The request would raise the typical residential bill about 140 dollars yearly and follows a prior 2.5 percent annual hike for a new Jenkinsville nuclear plant. Public comments run through March 22 with a May hearing and a mid July ruling.

SC Upstate freshman dies. officials investigate

State officials probe the death of 19 year old Daniel B Groshans of Rock Hill found unresponsive in his Spartanburg dorm. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says Groshans died Saturday afternoon at a local hospital after being discovered by his roommates. No illness was reported by university spokeswoman Tammy Whaley.
