Silver Bluff High School used a stifling zone and a 20 2 run in the second and third periods to beat Wade Hampton 63 50 and clinch the Region 6 AA championship and top seed in the region tournament. Brandon Key led with 19 points, while Sam Lilly praised the win as a senior finale and a push toward the state playoffs. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was granted a $1 million bond by Superior Court Judge Doris Downs, allowing him to remain at his Maryland home while awaiting trial on murder charges. The bond restricts travel to Georgia for case events, requires $200,000 cash, alcohol and drug abstinence, and a 9 p.m. curfew. NFL figures including Art Modell testified to his character. Lewis cooperated but did not speak.
Robert Pressley sealed a Daytona 500 berth with a surprising first round time of 189.008 mph. The Asheville, North Carolina driver, driving the Jasper Engines Taurus owned by Doug Bawel, avoids the need for Thursday qualifying races, as his fast lap secures a spot among the top two in round one and positions him for the 43-car lineup and provisional starters based on last year’s owner points. Pressley credits improved organization and a new crew chief, Ryan Pemberton, for the team’s better funding and engineering setup as they target stronger results in Talladega and July races.
