Mike Salley of Wagener pleaded guilty but mentally ill to attempted criminal sexual conduct in the first degree involving a 10 year old. Aiken County judge ruled Salley competent to stand trial after a competency hearing as he faced a 25 year prison term.
Co chairs Holly Waltz and Windi McMaster led a full house meeting with 34 plus teams registering for the 2010 Relay set for May 21 at Aiken High School. ACS official Michael Brazier praised funds raised and outlined uses while teams plan yard sale and chili cook off to boost proceeds.
The Warren B. Whitson "Yes I Can" Memorial Scholarships at Silver Bluff and Midland Valley honor the longtime principal Warren Whitson who served 37 years at local schools. Donations support two awards, one from Dusty Rhodes and an endowment at Public Education Partners, aiming to boost college readiness and enrollment for graduates.
The Local Accommodations Tax Committee invites funding requests for tourism related projects in Aiken County for July 2010 to June 2011. Eligible projects boost hotel stays and may include cultural recreational historic facilities and access improvements.
