Resentencing for Paul Koon begins Monday in Aiken General Sessions Court. He was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Valerie White Newsome in 1981 and sentenced to death. Trial will focus on the sentence as Judge William T. Howell presides at 10 a.m. in the Aiken County Courthouse.

Wholesale prices fall record 1 percent in January

Wholesale prices dropped a record 1 percent in January led by sharp declines in natural gas and home heating oil costs and lower gasoline prices. Food costs also fell while energy and overall inflation outlook improved, with experts predicting a possible sub 3.5 percent annual inflation for 1982.

Aiken Duff’s Smorgasbord to Close in February

Duff’s Smorgasbord in Heritage Square will close Sunday February 27 after operating since October 1981. Sun Belt Restaurants Inc president Weldon E Wyatt said 27 employees were notified February 4 and many workers will transfer to the Augusta Duff’s or the under construction Myrtle Beach location. He cited Aiken’s market size and the need for higher volume. Tammy Smith manages the Aiken site, part of a 160 restaurant chain based in Cincinnati. Wyatt said the company is negotiating with potential tenants for the Duff’s site.

Fiberglas rehiring lifts Owens-Corning to 1200 workers

Over six months about 400 furloughed hourly workers returned to Owens Corning Fiberglas, bringing total hourly employment to 1200, near last summer's level though below the 1690 full production target. Plant manager cites inventory cuts and strong shingles sales as reasons. A Rhode Island plant closure planned for April could shift 300 Rhode Island jobs to Aiken and Huntingdon with minimal impact on Aiken.

Local Investor Group Buys Houndslake in Aiken

A group of 17 investors in Aiken purchased Houndslake Country Club facilities for 1.3 million dollars. The deal includes the golf courses clubhouse tennis courts and swimming pool on 225 acres. Penland and Jones retain undeveloped property and Houndslake Realty.
