Woman sentenced 24 years in manslaughter case in Williston

Arolyn Abney, 25, received 24 years in state penitentiary after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the September stabbing death of Danny McKinney, 43. Circuit Judge Henry F. Floyd imposed the sentence at a plea hearing in Aiken County General Sessions Court. Abney had been charged with murder after McKinney was found with multiple stab wounds in his bedroom. police arrested her on Sept. 4.

Arson arrests in Jan. 17 North Augusta house fire

North Augusta Public Safety reports three arrests for arson in the second degree tied to a January 17 fire at 1137 Weston Street. Eve lyn Gomillion Ford, 50, Janice Gomillion, 34, and Christopher B. Gomillion, 19, face up to 25 years in prison. Two suspects list Weston Street addresses. Christopher Gomillion lists an Augusta address. Cathedral Aisle in Hitchcock Woods reopens after culvert repairs and railings were installed.

Private Landfill Costs Higher By CARL LANGLEY

Aiken County faces about 600000 more yearly costs if a private firm runs the Savannah River Site regional landfill versus county operation. Current disposal runs about 12 per ton, could rise to 20 per ton under private operation. Delays in permits and construction threaten opening by November 15, with January 1 more realistic, adding at least 600000 in extra costs through six months. The site plans two 15 acre cells initially, expanding to over 100 acres with seven cells, and a 40 year life, plus potential recycling to cut volume. Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority moves to negotiate with Nations Waste of Columbia as eight counties will use the facility.

F-Canyon Restart Authorized At SAS

The Department of Energy authorized a full-scale restart of the F-Canyon at Savannah River Site, resuming operations after 1992. Hot operations will begin next week to stabilize 16,000 irradiated Mark-31 targets and corroded spent fuel in basins, with stabilization of Taiwan Research Reactor fuel and EB R II slugs to follow. Senator Strom Thurmond praised the move as a tangible step in addressing the site spent fuel issue.
