Arrest ruling upholds Aiken ordinance despite challenge
The South Carolina Supreme Court affirmed the 2013 conviction of Larry D. Smith for dis orderly conduct and related charges stemming from a 2013 incident on Union Street. The court held the facial challenge to Aiken City Code Chapter 22, Article I, Section 223(b) was not clear enough to void the ruling, noting overbreadth doctrines and First Amendment limits. German family traces war history in Aiken and Saluda counties
The Liebell family from Germany visited Aiken and Saluda counties on February 1 and 2 to explore ancestors wartime history. Gunther Liebelt, a former POW who worked on farms in 1945, helped connect with Monetta residents Dick Holstein and family. A historic marker now marks the former POW camp site on Highway 19.
