A CSX train carrying hazardous materials derailed in rural McCormick County near Highway 10 and Wideman Cemetery Road. No serious injuries or environmental damage reported. two engine cars and several cars derailed, but hazardous materials cars remained intact. No national headline, officials say.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe crews clean up a 29-car derailment near Sauk Rapids on Feb 2. All derailed cars out of a 115-car coal train. No injuries reported.
A controlled burn escaped near North Augusta and consumed brush and damaged a 6,500 square foot Lakes and Streams subdivision home. Fire Chief Phil Napier said the fire spread into an interior wall and attic, rendering the Lake Murray Drive residence uninhabitable. Fire crews from multiple units tackled the blaze late Tuesday afternoon.
University of South Carolina President Dr. Andrew Sorensen announced a planned hydrogen consortium with USC Clemson South Carolina State the University of Georgia and the Georgia Tech to pursue joint alternative fuel cell research. Others call the Monday Aiken reveal premature.
