Prime Minister elect Ariel Sharon and outgoing Ehud Barak discussed Friday the possibility of forming a coalition government despite strong disagreements. The talks signal an effort to stabilize governance as negotiations continue.

Makaylia Coleman an 18 month old child lies near death at the Medical College of Georgia as a criminal investigation continues. Saquan Tyrone Bostick her mother’s boyfriend 26 could face homicide charges if she dies. Authorities say the child was hurt Saturday in an apartment on University Parkway with injuries expected to cause permanent impairment. Bostick was arrested Tuesday.
Katie Conyers, a 13 year old seventh grader from Paul Knox Middle School, won the Aiken County Spelling Bee for the second straight year at North Aiken Elementary School. The winning word was rhythm, which Paige Speed Catotti could not spell, placing her second.
Paige, the Aiken resident and youngest in her class, spoke of reading often and nervousness on stage. Her mother is an English teacher, her father in the newspaper business, and she anchors WRED News at school. She jokes about spelling and her favorite author Charlotte Bronte, while noting a blue belt and plans to beat up See CONYERS.
In Columbia the South Carolina Senate opened debate on two rival lottery proposals. One assigns major control to the governor, the other to the Legislature, with Republican Sens. Scott Richardson and Jim Ritchie introducing their version while Gov. Hodges backs a different measure. The House delayed action on Hodges’ plan to focus on the state budget, as leaders warn the education lottery faces opposition from some lawmakers.
In Columbia Democrats push to stall voter approved tax cuts. Senator Ernie Passailaigue argues new bills would shift tax burdens by permitting counties to add sales taxes to reduce property taxes on vehicles. Another bill would cut auto assessment from 10.5 to 6 percent over six years.
