South Aiken names Pippin as new football coach and AD

Months of speculation ended Tuesday night when the Aiken County School Board approved Daniel J. Pippin as South Aiken High School's football coach and athletic director. Pippin replaces Butch Nelson from Tawas Area High School in Michigan after 14 applications and 12 interviews.

Interview committee members South African principal Bill Gasman Assistant Principal Lynn Landis and athletic director Karen Carter selected Pippin to head the Tawas Area High football program in 1996. Pippin previously coached wrestling and assisted football at Georgetown High School in South Carolina and would become the third SA coach since Larry Nelson’s 1994 resignation. Bruce Hill then Butch Nelson led at South Aiken.

Hill convicted in DSS killings risks death sentence

David Mark Hill sat in the Aiken County Judicial Center and refused to mount a defense as jurors convicted him of three counts of murder, kidnapping, burglary and gun charges for the Sept. 16, 1996 shooting spree at the North Augusta DSS office. The same jury will determine his punishment, possibly the death penalty, with a hearing set for Thursday.

Blue Cross and local doctors stall contract talks in Aiken

PCI Inc led doctors at Aiken Regional Medical Centers in a dispute with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina over in network access. Blue Cross pulled its three year offer, planning to contract individually with area physicians, leaving WSRC employees in doubt.
