OSHA Keeps Cotton Dust Exemption for knitting mills
The federal OSHA will continue the exemption from stricter cotton dust standards for up to 44 South Carolina knitting mills. The move, based on UNC research funded by the textile industry, drew fire from the South Carolina Brown Lung Association but was praised by the state Textile Manufacturers Institute. The agency says the current pre 1978 limits remain in effect while it reviews future standards.

Washington AP reports on a two week strike by independent owner operators about 100000 drivers. They haul 85 to 90 percent of fresh and frozen foods and half the steel. New tax hikes raise fuel tire and highway use taxes with use tax rising to 1900 by 1988, though independents wait until 1989.
