Graniteville area seniors join weekly sessions on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon at the Aiken County Recreation Center on US 1. Activities include crafts, games, trips, and socializing with peers. For info, call Helen at 663-6142.

USC Aiken hosts a Health and Fitness Carnival in the Students Activities Center on Tuesday March 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event, sponsored by Education and Nursing schools and the USDA Wellness Program, features 30 plus booths with health care representatives offering on site screenings such as hearing blood typing cholesterol blood pressure flexibility and vision. Trained volunteers assist with state and federal returns at H Odell Weeks Activities Center and St John’s United Methodist Church, Mondays and Fridays 9am to noon and 2pm to 5pm, and Tuesdays 9am to noon. Federal and state forms provided. service targets low income, elderly, handicapped, and non English speakers.
James Krasnick and 13 volunteers offer free tax preparation and advice through the AARP Tax-Aide program. In 1994 counselors assisted nearly 600 seniors countywide, with locations at First Presbyterian Church of Aiken and other sites. Free service runs through April 15 and requires 1994 tax forms and related documents.
The New York Times reports Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund posted a $35.7 million deficit in the 1995 fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, with higher outlays and sicker patients driving the shortfall. Officials say the decline is significant and no tax increases are planned.
