Mary Wilson wife of Britain's prime minister appeared as a guest disc jockey on BBC radio's Open House record request program in London.
Treasury reports January redemptions of 529 million dollars for Series E H bonds and Freedom Shares. New bond sales totaled 407 million, creating a 122 million deficit—the largest in a lengthy trend since December 1968. Officials expect the trend to reverse as Congress raised savings bond interest rates last year.
Aiken prepares a four day Tricentennial celebration February 12 to 15 focusing on an antique vehicles show at the old Holley Motor Co. building and a fox hunt at Woodside Plantation with 38 hounds. Other events include a musical jamboree at North Augusta Elementary School and a WAKN FM program presenting Drums Along the Savannah.
AP reports the first postwar talks between Poland and West Germany focusing on the Oder-Neisse border. West German official Duckwitz and Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Jozef Winiewicz discuss recognition of the border and possible provisional acceptance in exchange for German credits and technical aid.
Retired General Omar Bradley joined the premiere crowd for Patton A Salute to a Rebel in New York. He praised the film as true to history and said Karl Malden captured his likeness well while George C Scott portrayed Patton.
Arthur Godfrey vowed to stop radio and TV commercials for Axion unless Colgate-Palmolive lets him declare on air that the product pollutes water. Colgate declined to comment. Godfrey says Colgate told him Axion is an enzyme that cleans dirt and does not pollute, but he cites its phosphate content and pollutant status.
Nearly 200000 South Koreans gathered in Seoul to condemn what they called a North Korean bid to obtain cholera germs from Japan. A resolution urged U N Secretary General U Thant and the International Red Cross to act. In Tokyo Tokyo officials denied germ smuggling but left open the possibility that orders could have been placed with a Japanese firm. The Osaka trading firm involved refused to comment as Japan’s Maritime Safety Agency opened a full scale probe into the alleged shipments. North Korea accused Japan of slander over the report.
Police speculate Martin Berns a 21 year old former mental patient may have bombed Shaker Heights municipal building and died in blast. Authorities say he acted alone and may have died. the explosion leveled the colonial town hall injuring 15. Remains found in wreckage include hair bone and flesh.
Washington reports defense officials say Safeguard strategic missiles will not be placed near major cities with Washington D C as an exception to defend command control. The plan aims for area defense against potential Red Chinese threats over the next decade while Senate leaders accuse the President of shifting rationale and credibility gaps.
The Aiken Polo Club starts its 88th season Sunday at Whitney Field with a 3 30 p m opening game. Practice matches on Powderhouse Fields are set for Wednesday and Friday afternoons, weather permitting, starting around 3 p m. Top players expected include G H Bostwick Lewis Smith Heath Manning Don Boyd Trippett Boineau Al Fortugno Tom Biddle and Dave Widener with Northrup Knox and Alan Corey Jr plus his sons later in the year. Sundays game may pit G H Bostwick against Lewis Smith.
U S Senator Strom Thurmond will visit Aiken February 13 with a full program starting at the Aiken Edgefield Industrial Education Center to inspect federally funded training for the unemployed and meet about 300 center graduates now employed locally. He will plant a Tricentennial Tree at Aiken High School and speak at a 2 PM assembly, then address St Angela Academy at 3 PM and plant another tree, with a reception in the residence hall afterward.
American fighter bombers attacked SAM sites and antiaircraft guns in North Vietnam near the Ban Karai Pass, with no losses reported. The action follows a Jan. 28 strike that left an F106 and a rescue helicopter down and eight Americans missing amid a Tet cease fire.
Aiken County vote recount confirms Gene N Daniels of North Augusta as winner of Attendance Area 2 seat. Daniels gains 11 votes to lead Folger by 25, 1502 to 1477, after unofficial 1492 to 1478. Sorge wins at large seat, succeeding Weibel. New members take March board meeting seats amid bus policy protests.
About 100000 General Electric workers voted nearly three to one to accept a new contract and end a 101 day strike. Some workers planned to return to work today while others may wait until Monday.
Four students from the Aiken Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina were named to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Honorees Larry Abney James Holly Dianne Newton and Jodie Springer are sophomores cited for academic achievement campus leadership and service.
