Cairo reports Toasts between Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy and Soviet Deputy Premier Andrei Gromyko reveal Egypt’s anger at Soviet limits on arms and Moscow’s dissatisfaction with Cairo leaning on American diplomacy for peace with Israel. Fahmy thanks Russia while urging increased Arab defense, and Gromyko says Soviet policy remains unchanged despite Western actions.
President Ford mocked calls for gas rationing at a conference in Atlanta while noting support from eight Southern governors. He compared rationing to washing a car rather than tuning it up and warned it would punish low income Americans by creating coupon trades priced up to 1.75 dollars per gallon.
