Harry and Rose Smith of North Augusta were indicted in January on federal life insurance fraud charges. They are slated for a February 27 pre trial conference in Columbia with jury selection March 6, and a February 14 pre trial hearing. Prosecutors say they used mail and interstate wires to file false life insurance applications with American National, Columbian Financial Group, and Mutual of Omaha, and induced others to apply for policies they were not eligible for.
