Voters faced cold but clear weather as polls opened for the Aiken County School Board race. By midmorning turnout was modest with Six Points precinct at about 25 votes and Aiken 3 leading with 48. Five seats are contested with incumbents and challengers across Areas 1 to 4, and registration totals near 33,700.

The Aiken County Jail will be integrated today under a federal court order. Sheriff Paul D. Grant received a $9,300 supplemental appropriation for five months to hire four additional jailors, boosting staffing to meet federal and state standards. The State Board of Corrections flagged multiple unsatisfactory items including medical exams within 24 hours, clothing sterilization, showers, vermin checks, and bed linens for 83 beds. Regular roving guards will replace intercom reliance, with two officers needed to open cell doors. a further appropriation may be needed for medical exams.

Army Sgt Charles R Shorter, 31, of Columbia South Carolina, died from ten bullet wounds suffered in a tavern gun battle on January 2. He died Saturday at Kimbrough Army Hospital at Fort Meade. One of three involved men was wounded and arrested. the other two remained at large.
A Danielsville Georgia fire killed Horace Gooch 57 and his sons Raymond 6 Edward 5 and Michael 18 months after a fire in the fireplace. Mrs Gooch escaped with the youngest child as Gooch died trying to save the others. Fire crews fought the blaze on U S 29 two miles north of Danielsville but could not save the wooden frame house.
Four young men from Durham were arrested Monday forty minutes after a bank robbery in the Research Triangle area. Police recovered about $6000 in a pillowcase found in their car during a traffic stop on U S Route 70 east of Durham.
Tickets go on sale Thursday for the first of three major spring horse events at Jefferson-Aiken Mile Track. About 5000 tickets printed with advance price 1 dollar and gate price 1.25 dollars. Proceeds from the standardbred race benefit the Aiken Cancer Society per Abraham Shultz. The slate includes the Aiken Trials and the Aiken Hunt Meet on March 20.
Kimberly-Clark promotes Raymond Jankowski to beech Island mill manager succeeding Marvin Gade who will return to Wisconsin in March to oversee nine mills of the U S consumer products unit. Gade and family have lived in Aiken since 1967 and chaired local civic groups.

Savannah River Plant produces plutonium-238 for Apollo 14s thermoelectric power unit. The generator, about the size of a wastebasket with no moving parts, powers lunar instruments and will emit energy for at least a year. GE Space Division built the unit and SRL prepared the fuel eight pounds of plutonium-238.
Theo dore Ted Hamilton 57 of Aiken County was shot five or six times at a Park Avenue trailer during a late night party. Howard Boyd, Talatha resident, is held without bail on murder charges. Investigators Hastings Boyd Cheeks Johnson and Chief Deputy Hutson led the probe. An inquest will be scheduled later.
A sellout crowd is expected at the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner featuring Dr. Thomas Haggai. The event starts at 7 30 p m at the Heart of Aiken Restaurant with the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award presented by past chamber president John M Hunter.
A frame building at Wagener High School, once a cannery, burned last night and was a total loss. It housed storage and offices for the bus supervisor and was to be remodeled as a band room. Some band instruments, plywood, and paint were lost. Aiken Fire Department was alerted and responded but low water pressure hindered efforts.
