A 61 year old man pleaded guilty to murder of a 24 year old hiker and was immediately given life in prison with parole eligibility after 30 years. The case was heard Thursday and the sentence followed the guilty plea.
Obituary notice lists Brenda Durden Bishop of Warrenville Virginia Ridge Spring and Alice J Johnston of Belvedere among recent deaths with funeral details following the 6A section.
South Aiken High senior Carla Lampley shadowed state Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex as he spoke at a town hall. Lampley credits the Teacher Cadet program with steering her toward teaching while Rex warned of shortages as aging educators retire and pay, facilities, and mentoring lag.
Larry Schrade, longtime Naval Junior ROTC commander at Midland Valley High School, will retire in June after 17 years at the school. A former Navy aviator with 20 years in service, he valued shaping cadets and their leadership during Pass in Review events. Principal Warren Whitson hired him from 19 applicants. Area ROTC manager Gart Jones praised him as a class act and a friend.
A 27 year old man from Aiken County died in a single vehicle rollover on Highway 278 toward Beech Island. The 1993 Toyota Camry left the eastbound lane, overturned more than five times, and the driver was ejected. He was not wearing a seat belt. Speed may have been a factor. toxicology results pending. This is the third fatal crash in Aiken County this year.
Clemson University researchers led by food microbiologist Paul L. Dawson tested mouth to chip to dip transfer during double dipping. Undergraduate students created three dipping setups to measure microbial transfer and found detectable, surprising levels of contamination, challenging assumptions about spreading germs at gatherings.
