Spartanburg Pension Official Remains Rooted on Ancestral Estate

Eli F. Wall, a Spartanburg county Confederate pension commissioner, has lived eighty-two years on his family estate in Spartanburg. He has rarely moved, surviving in the same house most of his life, and plans to attend a Confederate reunion in Charlotte. He recalls past imprisonment with pride and notes the old mountain home and its antique features, including a kitchen outbuilding and a large old fireplace. The Wall land originated from a 1835 purchase for fifteen cents an acre, with about 1500 acres once owned and around 500 still held by family members.
