Spartanburg Senator pushes longer life sentences bill
A Spartanburg Republican state senator, Shane Martin, filed a bill adding five crimes to life sentence eligibility under South Carolina law. The proposal targets common law robbery, discharging a weapon into a dwelling, aggravated criminal domestic violence, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, and taking a weapon from an officer. The measure would operate within the two strikes and three strikes framework, requiring a solicitor to seek life for repeated serious offenses. Martin pressed the measure after meeting with Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright following a shooting case.
