Aiken County government readies its Emergency Operations Center for Y2K, with more than two dozen agencies at command posts or on standby. Emergency services director Rick Powell says they will be prepared despite fears of computer shutdowns as the year 2000 begins.
Five hijackers surrendered after an eight day standoff on an Indian Airlines jet in Kandahar. Prisoners including Pakistani cleric Masood Azhar were released from Indian jails and flown to Afghanistan in exchange for the 155 hostages. The freed hostages were to be flown to New Delhi as officials confirm no injuries.
Jackson police found Roy Smith dead in his basement after a trap laden scene at 201 Burroughs Street. Authorities say death by own action is suspected. Smith had recent divorce and missed counseling. Notes on doors warned against entry, and a trapped garage area was linked to a gas and electrocution risk.
