Aiken Center for the Arts will not hold its downtown New Year celebration this year citing poor turnout and competing millennium plans. Executive director Doug Rabold says the event, held since 1983 as First Night style alcohol free entertainment, was dropped to conserve municipal resources and avoid a weak turnout.
Police are not yet discussing details of the death of Tiffaney Shereese Wilson as investigators enter a third day. Two hunters found Wilson's body Tuesday at 5:35 pm in a wooded area off Bettis Academy Road. Agencies including Aiken County Sheriff's Office North Augusta Public Safety and the FBI searched the area after contact from the hunters ending a month‑long search. Wilson, who turned 18 on December 8, had been missing since December 4 when she and her infant daughter Kaitlyn disappeared from the Marketplace shopping center in North Augusta. Her daughter was found abandoned at a Georgia welcome center and Wilson’s car and clothing were located in nearby locations.
Aiken residents are urged to celebrate safely as the millennium arrives. Inspector David Turno warns it is illegal to discharge fireworks within city limits and Dry conditions raise fire risk. He advises water or a fire extinguisher nearby, legal accountability for fires, and suggests enjoying professionally provided displays. He also cautions about purchasing fireworks and directs readers to CARE page 8A.
Area business leaders and officials say they are ready for the Y2K rollover from 1999 to 2000. South Carolina Electric & Gas officials report preparations since 1996 with extra staffing and a broad monitoring plan. Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and Aiken Regional Medical Centers express confidence, noting contingency plans and tested systems. Carolina First Bank is Y2K compliant with extensive readiness efforts underway since 1997.
Governor Jim Hodges of South Carolina faced a mixed first year with notable gains in education and economic development. Political observers say he has earned a C grade, with critics suggesting no major achievements but no clear missteps either.
Area stores still have Year 2000 and Happy New Year party supplies though stock is limited and selling out quickly. Camilla Davis of Your Next Affair in Downtown Aiken says manufacturers are exhausted and few items remain such as champagne glasses, 2000 shaped confetti, hats, tiaras, throws, and related decor.
