President Ford, in Vail Colorado, defends launching the 135 million swine flu inoculation program while acknowledging that halting the project might have been a wise decision. He spoke with reporters after a ski run demonstration and refused to answer serious questions.
In Clayton North Carolina five high school students died in a head on crash on a Wake County road. Two women in the other car also perished and five others were injured. The scene officer called it a nightmare event.
The Agriculture Department reports tobacco spending near 16.6 billion dollars this year up from 15.6 billion in 1975, with more than 90 percent spent on cigarettes. The figures show rising sales despite warns about cigarette hazards.
California Supreme Court rules the current property tax based school financing violates equal protection rights of 4.5 million public school pupils. Court orders replacement by 1980 to provide equal educational opportunities in rich and poor districts. Justices split 4 to 3.
Democratic leaders declare an end to White House Congress disputes and announce plans to double the effect of the public works job program. The first major element of President elect Carter's package aims to create at least 150000 jobs through expanded public works funding.
Detroit federal judge Wade H. McCree Jr. says he has been contacted about a possible deputy attorney general or solicitor general role in a Carter administration. He notes he has only been asked about availability and does not consider an offer likely or certain.
President elect Carter says he wants public suggestions to bridge the gap between the presidency and ordinary citizens. He fears the isolation of power and seeks ways to stay connected while moving into the White House.
Aiken County former chairman Harold Graybeal is absolved of malfeasance in office after Attorney General Daniel R. McLeod concludes there is no basis for action. The probe followed Graybeal signing and seeking destruction of a resolution terminating a county administrator. The document remained filed and public records show it was not destroyed.
The Aiken City Council unanimously approves an $8 monthly rate for Aiken Cablevision Inc starting Jan 1. The firm, franchised by the city, has 3,100+ residential subscribers and has not posted a profit. Expansion plans depend on economic feasibility with a park area to be surveyed.
The Aiken Standard will cost 15 cents at racks and 70 cents per week for home delivery starting January 1. Prepaid customers receive a discount. City carriers share the higher cost due to pricier newsprint supplies and labor. Previously the paper sold for 10 cents per copy.
The Aiken County governing body will be sworn in Sunday at 3 PM on the courthouse steps. Council member Mim Woodring says the ceremony marks a formal tradition after years of a new government. Sen McMillan will swear in chairman-elect Carrol Warner with Probate Judge Hair conducting the remainder. Special guest Joseph L Usry will give the benediction.
The City of Aiken passed first and second readings on ordinances to join the Horse Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility as a customer and to bond 14 million dollars for capital outlay. The agreement with Aiken County PSA calls for construction to start before February and be completed by the end of June 1979.

A man was found dead near Wagener early today. Investigators from the Aiken County Sheriff's Department were on the scene and a suspect is in custody. Further information was unavailable at press time.
Franklin Ashley, former USC Aiken faculty member, attended poet James Dickey's marriage to Deborah Elizabeth Dodson of Myrtle Beach yesterday. Dickey now teaches at USC in Columbia. The notice also suggests announcing New Year’s resolutions immediately after midnight then going to bed to keep intentions.
City council discusses rate hikes to fund the wastewater facility project. First readings set with second reading and public hearing on Jan 10. The service contract grants the city an irrevocable right to 3,011,000 gallons daily for treatment while the plant operates.
