A Portland hillside display of a giant glowing martini glass gains a red circle with a slash, a flexible symbol driving by reads as prohibition. Gary Cooke, 42, installs the display each year and notes the sign comes on at midnight and off at 4 a.m. as the glass is enlarged this season.
The parsonage where the Bronte sisters were born in 1802 Thornton Bradford is for sale and likely to become apartments. The Brontes Charlotte Emily Anne and Branwell were born there before the family moved to Haworth seven miles away. The Haworth parsonage is now a museum and pilgrimage site for Bronte fans.
Partly cloudy conditions are expected tonight and tomorrow with possible rain on New Year’s Day. Temperatures reach a high in the low 50s and a low in the low 30s. Details are on Page 7B.

At the Iran U.S. Claims Tribunal in The Hague negotiators from Iran and the United States met to settle terms for returning 506 million dollars plus interest held in escrow. They discussed pledges not to seek further claims after closure and possible arbitration of surplus funds. The talks come as Iran signals potential leverage over hostages in Lebanon if assets are released.
Solvent farm banks in the Northeast and Texas go to federal court to challenge limits on required bailouts for troubled Farm Credit districts. Springfield and Texas banks warn that possible reserve seizures threaten future lending while arguing Congress intended restricted takings.
