Aiken city reports show eleven seconds to cross the Rutland Drive crossing with a train 20 MPH approaching from the south. It details bus timing, required stops, and safety patrol rules affecting 540 to 648 children daily as twelve buses cross the track.
Rose Vanderveld and William Lee Poe III, both teens aged 15 and 16, remain hospitalized in Augusta after a Dec. 9 crash on Wire Road in Aiken. Officials say Vanderveld is doing all right while Poe's condition is about the same, though both were previously listed in critical condition and have shown slight improvement.

Kremlin spokesman said Vasily Kuznetsov will fly to Beijing in a few days to resume border talks with China. Talks began Oct 20 but were paused Dec 14 when Kuznetsov returned to Moscow for the Supreme Soviet session. No progress reports have been issued and East Bloc communists express pessimism.
The case of Ralph Hayes director of the Smith Hazel Recreation Center charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest from a Waffle House incident was postponed until Friday in City Recorder's Court. Donald Floyd Brooks also faced disorderly conduct charges, and bonds of 100 dollars were set. The hearing included related shooting incidents and a confession by Eddie Lemon who pleaded guilty to simple assault.
Raquel Ramfis Trujillo, son of the Dominican Republic's late dictator, dies of pneumonia in a Madrid clinic after a fogbound head on collision with the Duchess of Albuquerque aboard a Jaguar and Trujillo's Ferrari. The Duchess, 44, is dead and her son, 11, injured.
Vermont declared a disaster area as the fourth winter storm in two weeks dumped nearly 50 inches of snow with drifts up to 30 feet cutting off motorists and households. The weather spread across New England with power failures and flooding in Massachusetts New Hampshire and Maine. Twelve deaths in six states were linked to the storm and snowmobile rescues were mounted.
Reports from Saigon describe three firefights east of the city and an attack on a U S patrol boat as Viet Cong forces set a 72 hour cease fire to begin at 1 a m Tuesday local time. Casualties included eight Americans and 11 South Vietnamese killed, plus 49 enemy killed.
