A 26 year old Tok yu Metropolitan University student Masahiro Nakadai set himself on fire at a Buddhist temple in Nikko about 135 miles north of Tokyo. Police say motive unknown.
The nation marks a Christmas weekend with 209 traffic fatalities as snow ice and rain hamper travel in the East Midwest and Far West. The tally runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday local time.
A time bomb damaged the O Connell Monument in Dublin early today, breaking the bronze figure and base rear while shattering windows within half a mile. An army bomb squad deemed the statue safe after inspection. The Ulster Volunteer Force claimed responsibility for three other recent explosions at Ballyshannon power station, the Wolfe Tone Monument, and Dublin's national TV station.

Willie Sutton known as The Actor speaks of crime not paying after Christmas release from Attica State Prison. The 68 year old bank robber was freed by the Department of Corrections following a preholiday case review. Sutton spent 17 years behind bars and had lengthy sentences set aside in recent weeks.
