Montreal AP report says three prime suspects in the Pierre Laporte kidnap and murder case have been arrested. Named are Paul Rose 27 Jacques Rose 23 and Francis Simard 23. Laporte seized in October and found dead a week later. Rose sought also in Cross kidnapping.
Liz Taylor, 38, returns to cinema with Zee and Co earning a share of profits. She cut 10 pounds for the role at Shepperton Studios near London, saying she may retire though she enjoys acting.
Rep. L Mendel Rivers, 65, dies after heart surgery in Birmingham. Gov. Robert McNair to call a special election likely in spring to fill South Carolina's 1st District seat. Rivers, longtime Armed Services chair, helped bring over $200 million in annual military payroll to the district.

Democratic rivals include five contenders led by Mackey Scott and Raymond Holley. The winner battles the Democratic victor in a February 23 advisory election. Burgess is a Columbia native who settled in Aiken in 1954 and served in WWII. Freeman is a local farmer and businessman.
Police identify Burtis P Byrd of 1257 Alfred St Aiken as the man killed along U S Highway 1 near the northern city limits. The driver left the scene and has not been apprehended. Funeral plans pending. Survivors include daughter Harriett Brown of Pittman New Jersey. Public Safety Director Busbee called it the sole traffic fatality in the county during the holiday weekend. Coroner James Gregory will hold an inquest.
