Sid Luft filed a $200 000 libel suit in Superior Court accusing Mel Torme of making disparaging remarks about Luft in a book titled The Other Side of the Rainbow With Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol. Luft was Judy Garland’s third husband, married 13 years before their 1965 divorce. Garland died in 1969 at 47.
Rome city records show Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti earned over 1 million dollars together in 1970 with Loren at 560000 and Ponti at 456000. They claim residency in Switzerland to avoid city taxes though Rome notes Loren’s tax would be about 80000. Prince Torlonia reported 600000 and faces an estimated 86000 tax.
Washington AP reports Senator Richard B. Russell showing definite signs of improvement from a respiratory infection. An aide says doctors are more encouraged, noting progress since last week.
All departments of the Aiken Standard will be closed tomorrow so employees may observe Christmas Day with their families. The switchboard closed at noon today. Normal publication deadlines will resume on Monday.

Former State Rep Albert Dooley of Lexington faces no Democratic primary challenge for the four county South Carolina Senate seat to be decided Jan 5. Dooley will run in the Feb 23 special election. The seat, covering Lexington Attken Saluda and Edgefield, was vacated by Floyd Spence. Five Republicans from Lexington—Hydrick Cooper Truax Antley and Parnell—filed for the GOP primary, with Hydrick a West Columbia attorney and WWII veteran.
Saigon reports a Christmas cease-fire in South Vietnam with 24 hours of halted offensive operations starting 6 p.m. Saigon time. Bombers continue strikes in Cambodia and Laos where the truce does not apply. Official tallies show low weekly combat deaths for Americans and South Vietnamese, with continued fighting at the margins and many casualties and missing personnel in Indochina.
U S hospital reports L Mendel Rivers remains seriously ill but improving as he recovers from heart surgery. The 65 year old chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is receiving family visits and his relatives thank supporters worldwide during the Christmas season.
The Aiken County Legislative Delegation will hold regular meetings on the first and third Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Aiken County Health Department on Richland Avenue. Meetings are open to the public with possible executive sessions. citizens may petition and request agenda items by contacting the delegation secretary in advance.
The note says 1,570 entries failed to win 380 dollars for Christmas and hints at a 390 prize for New Year. Lawrence N. Day Jr. joins South Carolina National Bank as assis tant vice president and senior local officer for Aiken and North Augusta succeeding Q Donald Maxwell who becomes president of the Bank of Oak Ridge. Day, 38, comes from Rock Hill after six years at Cluett Peabody and Co. He is a graduate of Jacksonville State College and has completed the South Carolina Bankers School and other banking courses. He is active in York County community groups and serves as a director for the York County Cancer Association and various local organizations.
