Aiken City Councilwoman Lessie Price was nominated as mayor pro tem, becoming the first African American to hold the post and the second milestone after being elected to the council in 1987. The vacancy followed Robert Perry leaving to join the S.C. House, with the position rotating per the 1997 council decision.
Voters in Aiken choose between Pat Canning Regions Bank executive and a candidate from Westinghouse Savannah ory special in Sutherlard for the vacant at large seat. Mount Vintage Plantation and Golf Club on Sweetwater Road between North Augusta and Edgefield is nearing completion. Bettis Rainsford and partners own the 4000 acre development featuring a par 72, 18 hole course designed by Tom Jackson, with Bermuda and rye overseeding, four lakes and rolling hills. The project blends real estate, a fox hunting club, and historical ties dating to 1796, aiming to be a premier Southeast course near Aiken and Augusta.
India sent a delegation to Afghanistan to negotiate with hijackers of an Indian Airlines plane after threats to begin killing passengers if demands were not met. The deadline passed without deaths as talks continued with Indian officials and Taliban security around Kandahar airport.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports at least ten deaths over the holiday period. Victims include 80 year old Benjamin Ott of St. Matthews in a head on collision on US 176, and Betty Lyda Lyda 70 of Claremont N C killed Christmas Day. Others: Brad Hamilton 22 of Bluffton, Al Fullwood 40 of Chester, Otis Williams Jr 63 of Columbia, Johnnie Poston 51 and Teresa Poston Thompson 27 of Shelby, Radla Humphries 83 of Blacksburg, Mark Hall 35 of Morganton, and Michael Watlington 34 of Semora.
