Christmas trees at the end of the season are treated as yard debris in Aiken North Augusta and New Ellenton. Public works estimate a two week window for pickup with trees placed outside with trash. Residents may reuse trees for feeding birds or burn dried wood in fireplaces.
Aiken County government moves several offices from the Richland Avenue complex to the old county health building next to the complex. The Indigent Health ac Commission and Employment and Training Act offices will open tomorrow in the health building. The prefabricated council office structure will be moved to the sheriff's department for use as additional offices.
Southern Bell in Columbia will cut rates on January 1 as the federal excise tax falls from 3 to 2 percent, part of a tax phase out by 1962. A 6 percent company rate hike is sought from the Public Service Commission, hearings set for January 3 after a delay due to another utility case.
Mr and Mrs Bobby L Matthews decorated for Christmas and a visiting stranger from Couchton Baptist Church praised their Nativity display. While they hosted friends the carolers sang and presented them with a white Bible as a holiday reward.
Vandalism at Houndslake Country Club damages the new nine hole section. A car crossed the fourth fairway and green and the fifth tee and fairway. the fourth green had prior damage. Superintendent J M Fulmer estimates $2000 in repairs and notes a two month restoration. A $200 reward is offered.

Rose Stores advise bringing items to customer service. J B White in Aiken or Augusta directs returns to the original department. Sears and Aiken mail order require receipts and store of purchase with long distance exchanges at the Aiken office. Local, non chain gifts may need prior phone checks.
Three American clergy returning from Tehran called for conciliation in the 54 day old standoff. Cardinal Duval said clemency for hostages could come quickly, while Ayatollah Khomeini warned of war amid economic and political tensions with the United States.
A recount controversy over Wagener Town Council’s December election led to a null declaration and a new election scheduled for January 8. Candidate William E. Stone challenged the result that saw Daniel E. Player win by six votes after the vote-counting error with door access during tallying.
The Kiwanis Christmas Classic tips off at 7:30 p.m. at the USCA Student Activities Center with College of Charleston 5 1 and Auburn University Mon 7 4 opening against USC Aiken 5 6 and Atlantic Christian 5 4. Tickets are 3 for one night or 5 for both. Strickland notes profit supports Kiwanis Scholarship fund and USCA Pacer Club as growth boosts optimism.
