Senator Philip A. Hart of Michigan, a longtime liberal and champion of civil rights and consumer protection, died at his Washington home after a battle with malignant melanoma. Dubbed the conscience of the Senate, he opposed concentrated corporate power and planned to dismantle large businesses. Funeral plans were announced, with a memorial Mass to be held at St Matthews Cathedral. Hart will be succeeded in the Senate by Donald W. Riegle.
