FAA Chief Criticizes Nixon Flight Coordination
Federal Aviation Administrator Alexander P. Butterfield voiced dismay that President Nixon’s California trip on a commercial jet was not coordinated with his agency in advance. He said the oversight left little time to implement special precautions for air traffic control during the presidential flight. Butterfield noted the system is safe but requires extra measures for presidential air travel.

Aiken County Hospital Debate Spurs Public Hearings
Between August 29 and September 17 the Aiken County Board of Commissioners held hearings in six towns to debate building a private or public hospital. Most attendees backed private hospital plans from HCA at about 9 million dollars, while a 10,058-name petition urged preserving the current hospital and expanding it. Local figures Davis and Kirsch criticized county control, and county officials signaled possible further hearings and a November 1974 referendum on hospital type.
