Skylab 3 astronauts Gerald Carr William Pogue and Edward Gibson observe comet Kohoutek near the sun at the mission halfway point. They also planned to discuss the comet with its discoverer Lukos Kohoutek in mission control as Milton Windler, the flight director, expressed confidence in completing the 84 day mission.
A Beech 95 Trav elair piloted by Barry Potts 23 of Mocksville North Carolina crashed in Hagerstown Maryland after circling to avoid a downtown landing. The single occupant died. Potts was employed by Mid Atlantic Airways of Greensboro. The crash damaged a beer warehouse and a dry cleaning business after hitting power lines a tree and vehicles.
An Amtrak Coast Star passenger train derailed early today one mile east of Anderson and ten miles north of Redding in Northern California. Up to 15 cars left the tracks and five overturned. Ambulances were summoned though no immediate injuries were reported. the train was en route from Oakland to Seattle and could be crowded due to the holiday season.
Three environmental groups ask the Atomic Energy Commission to deny the Barnwell County nuclear fuel plant permit citing higher costs and viable cheaper alternatives. A public hearing will be held on arguments about the proposal while the commission keeps the application under advisement.
Tammy Denice Haynes, a 12 year old Liberty South Carolina girl, remains missing after almost a week. FBI and SLED agents assist, with local police and deputies manning hot lines around the clock. A $2500 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the kidnapper or kidnappers.
New York stocks rose as brokers cited a better energy picture. The Dow gained 13.45 to 851.01 with 1,181 advancers over 443 decliners among 1,885 issues traded, the largest daily total on record. Texaco, Kennecott, AT&T, Winnebago and American Airlines moved in varied directions.
United Nations announced that Israeli and Egyptian negotiators agreed on some principles to govern separation of their armies along the Suez Canal. A two hour and 10 minute meeting yielded a consensus on the principles of disengagement, with frank exchanges on other principles and requests for clarifications. No specifics on which points were agreed or disputed were provided.
North Augusta City Council adopted the largest budget in city history, 1,189,987.89 dollars, after a public hearing with four citizens present. The plan includes a five mill tax increase, funding for five new employees including a city administrator and city engineer, higher salaries for staff, more gasoline funds, and four Valiant economy cars plus three more for public safety.

Energy chief William E. Simon ordered a six degree cut in oil fired home heating and placed service stations last in line for gasoline with a Jan. 15 implementation. Buildings using oil for heat must lower thermostats 10 degrees below 1972 levels. gas electricity and coal users are excluded. Regulations shift gasoline allocations to essential services and bulk buyers, with a possible 900,000 barrel per day reduction.
The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday with highs in the mid 60s and increasing clouds tonight. Sunday through Tuesday may bring showers along the coast and partly cloudy conditions elsewhere with a good chance of rain on New Year’s Day Tuesday.
