Pope Denounces Death Penalty as Christmas Blessings Go Global
Pope John Paul II delivered an unscripted call against the death penalty during midnight Mass and read greetings in 68 languages while noting the upcoming Holy Year. He urged peace efforts in the Middle East and prayed for those aiding a tormented region as Christmas services echoed across Jerusalem churches. Cardinal Ortega announced Cuba’s radio greeting as ties warm with the Vatican. In the Persian Gulf, USS Carl Vinson anchored for holiday celebrations with Santa and a “It’s a Wonderful Life” film aboard. Meanwhile, hardship marked the season in the Dominican Republic and Indonesia where a Christmas church fire and ruined housing left families seeking light.
