Sharon Nicodemus recalls a poverty stricken 1960s Christmas in San Diego. Her family, five children, faced no presents or dinner until a church visit sparked a charitable shopping trip followed by a simple Christmas morning surprise.
Ms. Nicodemus recalls a church led Christmas surprise in Aiken with a tree and many gifts. Her siblings in San Diego Phoenix and northern California donate food clothing and other basics to the needy and work in prison ministries while keeping acts anonymous. They aim to inspire others to give without obligation.
Aiken County residents faced heavy Christmas Eve traffic and celebrations while Christmas Day brought family meals and church and aid groups distributing food and gifts. Capt. Tom Galadi notes quiet Christmas Day normally, but Christmas Eve traffic and accidents marked the holiday in Aiken.
The Aiken Standard set an earlier deadline for the Christmas Day edition to give staff time with families. Some breaking items may not appear in today's edition and will be posted in Saturday's paper.
