The Christmas weekend raised Aiken County highway deaths to 38 this year. Paul Jeffcoat, 20, of 579 Laurens St., died when his car left Secondary 33 and hit a tree near North Augusta. Forrest Hightower, 65, of Ladson, died in a two car crash on I 20 near Martintown Road. Quitman Wells Jr., 41, of Wagener, was struck by a car on SC 39. Lilly May Quattlebaum, also of Wagener, died after stepping into the path of an oncoming car on SC 39. The Wagener fatalities were separate incidents.
Aiken City Council will hold a regular meeting tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Building Council chamber on Park Avenue. The public is invited to attend.
Aiken County Auditor George A. Williams announces 1979 procedure changes to mail personal property tax return cards, eliminating in person filings. Residents must list items owned on Jan 1, 1979 and mail the card back. deadlines run Jan 1 to Feb 28 with penalties for noncompliance. If cards are not received by Jan 15, residents should contact the auditor for help.
