AAA Carolina Motor Club reports lower 1991 gas prices with regular gasoline around 1.06 to 1.16 dollars and premium near 1.26 dollars. The survey of 262 stations in North and South Carolina shows most will be open on Christmas Day as motorists plan holiday travel.
The Associated Press reports a winter outlook with cold wet conditions in the South and milder weather to the north. Forecasters warn that winter varies by region with snow in some areas and rain or chilly spells along the Southeastern coast.
A class of 13 kindergarteners at Oakwood Windsor Elementary lined up before a Christmas tree mural last week as a photographer tried to capture smiles. Their teacher Brenda Bodie notes illness hindered smiles while the children sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
Rebels pounded Georgia's parliament in Tbilisi with rockets and machine guns as Yeltsin met Gorbachev in Moscow. At least 18 dead and 140 wounded, while President Gamsakhurdia clung to power in the basement of the parliament. The clash comes amid Georgia's stance outside the new post-Soviet commonwealth.
In Beirut Lebanon a partially decomposed body found along a road Saturday is suspected to be slain American hostage Lt Col William R Higgins. Coroner Harati said identification may take time and will involve teeth and hair analysis. The U S Embassy declined to comment while UN and U S officials press captors to reveal Higgins fate.

Secret Santa of the South Africa Presbyterian Church reports aid to over 1100 children while identifying more than 1700 from low income families needing help. Sponsors bought about 25 dollars in gifts each, with volunteers arranging delivery on Christmas morning. Some sponsor slots remained open but volunteers exceeded expectations and fund drives continue in Aiken with Toys for Toys and Salvation Army efforts including an Angel Tree and kettle funds.
