American Bank and Trust Company, Aiken Branch, under receiver George A. Durban, pays a 15 percent dividend on 75 percent of depositor balances as the second payout since its June 1926 closure. A prior 25 percent dividend was issued. future payouts are anticipated. The Columbia parent bank under Judge Purifoy has distributed 50 percent to depositors.
Gladys Kerr Fitzpatrick former Aiken resident died in Nutley New Jersey at age thirty three. She is survived by her husband Peter J Fitzpatrick four daughters and two brothers Lt James E Kerr Jr USMC and Cadet Kenneth L Kerr of The Citadel. Funeral services will be held in Nutley Saturday with relatives traveling from Aiken and Washington.
Hiram C Weeks 48, son of the late D Weeks of Windsor, died suddenly from a heart attack at his home Thursday night. He leaves a widow May Turner Weeks, three brothers Monroe Weeks Texas Hays Weeks Aiken Duncan C Weeks Williston and two sisters Char lie Anderson Williston May Weeks Aiken. He was a Masonic Lodge member and W O W camp member. Funeral Sunday at Levels Baptist Church with Rev J H Owens officiating. interment in the churchyard.
A carload of peanuts weighing about 19 tons and valued at 1541.20 was shipped from Aiken on Monday. This marks the seventh car shipped from Aiken this year with total receipts of 10438.38.
Christmas falls on Sunday this year, prompting county officers to close Monday along with banks and many city businesses. This reflects a prolonged holiday period affecting public services and commerce.
Under the Civic League the Community Christmas Committee is formed to collect donations from interested residents. Gifts will be sent to inmates at the County Home and Old Folks Home, the jail, and others named to the committee. Members include Mrs. Herbert E. Gyles Mrs. Abner Williams Mrs. Everette McDonald Jr Mrs. Wiehl and Mrs. J. C. Thomas.
Miss Mat Quattlebaum died at the home of her nephew J D Quattlebaum in Merrittts Bridge section last Monday in her seventy ninth year. Survived by two sisters Lizzie Quattlebaum and Sophia Corley three brothers J D Quattlebaum Jones Quattlebaum and Eugene Quattlebaum. Funeral services were held last Wednesday morning at Kedron Baptist Church.
Patterson circle met with Mrs. Kate Holley, Bostwick Lake circle with Mrs. B. T. Duches, and Edwards McLean circle held a night meeting with Mrs. W. C. Plunkett. All circles reported good attendance.
Home economics students at the Aiken Institute will display articles of cotton clothing they made in the windows of R W McCreary & Co on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The displays will vary each day.
The January Travel Talk Magazine, New York, will publish a short story on Aiken and run three city views provided by the Chamber of Commerce. Aiken gets heavy publicity this winter, with local views used to promote the “Queen of Winter Resorts.”
James Fullam, 81, died at Aiken Hospital Thursday evening after a long illness. A Macon, Georgia native, he lived here thirty years and is survived by two daughters and several grandchildren in Georgia. Funeral services were held Friday at 4 PM at the Catholic Church with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
Christmas at the Baptist Church features Dr Mc Lean preaching a Christmas Sermon Preparations for New Comings of Christ on Sunday at 11 15. Sunday school starts 9 46 a m and 6 30 p m program with Christmas music. School members bring gifts for Connie Maxwell Orphanage. Monday at 7 30 p m the Primary department presents a program and Christmas tree.

Congressman Butler B Hare from Saluda South Carolina introduces a bill to add extend and improve the Aiken post office building to serve as post office and courthouse The measure sets a cost cap of 150 000 and references referral to the House Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds
Town and Country magazine devotes two center pages of its Christmas issue to a reproduction of Wojciech Kossak’s painting of the Hitchcock grandchildren after quail at Aiken. The image is mailed to the Chamber of Commerce and displayed in the secretary’s office, boosting Aiken’s profile among winter resort visitors. The secretary thanks the magazine for the valuable publicity.
Next Tuesday at 8 30 Prof Carl Oiten of Philadelphia renowned singer of Negro spirituals will be heard at Friendship Baptist Church He is president of the National Association of Negro Musicians and has studied abroad He won first prize in the 1914 National Negro Composition contest admission for white people with a small fee
The Sunday New York Herald Tribune runs a full page road map for Aiken and mid south travel advising motorists to use the Aiken route or US Highway 1. It highlights Aiken as a winter resort with indoor life, scenery and parks. The Chamber of Commerce has 25 copies to answer inquiries. Local friend of Miss Della Kitchings reports a broken collar bone from a fall last Saturday.
