Fire crews battled a pre dawn blaze in Heather Wood subdivision damaging an unoccupied home at 501 Penn Street with no injuries reported. A second pair of fires along Buena Vista Avenue destroyed an abandoned 1000 square foot structure and caused minor damage to nearby buildings. Authorities urge tips to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

An 82 year old man from Greengate Circle at the Colony at South Park apartments was upgraded to good condition at Medical College of Georgia Hospital after a gunfire exchange with an off duty Aiken Public Safety officer. He had been wounded in the stomach while returned fire.

Autopsy confirms jail death cause in Richmond County case
Autopsy by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office shows Edward Richardson formerly of Belvedere died of asphyxiation in the Richmond County jail after authorities say he hanged himself last week. The State Forestry Commission canceled the Red Flag Fire Alert across 34 South Carolina counties as winds eased.
