Council to study 25 mph train speed limit

Aiken County Council considers an ordinance to cap train speeds at 25 mph on tracks between Graniteville and Beech Island after a Granitevill e crossing crash killed five. The plan seeks safer crossings and asks railways to avoid Valley area during school openings and mill shift changes.

Fire destroys mobile home. family away at work

A Whaley Pond Road mobile home in Graniteville burned to the ground Monday. Fire Chief Phil Napier said the structure was fully engulfed when responders arrived. The owners, a couple with two children, were not home. Neighbor Steven Murray reported smoke and small explosions from inside before midday.

Winter eases as official solstice arrives in CSRA

Meteorologist Robert Kurzeja of the SRS Weather Center says a two day cold spell ends with today’s high near 50, six degrees below normal, after Monday’s 36/19. Warmer air moves in through Wednesday with 57 degree highs, while a brief chance of rain and possible snow flurries near the Appalachians remains unlikely. Christmas Eve and Day look seasonally mild around 50.
