Volunteers track Christmas Bird Count across South Carolina
Volunteers across South Carolina will conduct about a dozen Christmas Bird Counts led by Lex Glover of the state Natural Resources Department. The first count starts today at Congaree Swamp National Monument with the National Audubon Society coordinating a 24 hour, 7.5 mile radius survey to document bird species and populations. The tradition began in 1900 as an alternative to side hunts and remains the world's largest volunteer bird survey.
