Origins and spread of Christmas greeting cards

The tradition began with schoolboys writing fancy progress letters at home. By the 1840s the first cards emerged in Britain with figures like John Calcott Horsley and Sir Henry Cole. The US adopted the practice after 1870s introductions by Marcus Card Company and today about 1.2 billion cards are sent yearly.
