Five relatives of Victoria DeLee sentenced in fraud case
In U S District Court five defendants pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the federal government. Victoria DeLee was hospitalized for surgery and did not attend sentencing. Elijah DeLee received three years, Verbenia Jefferson four, Dorothea Neat three, Harold Jefferson two with six months to serve plus three years probation, and Telestine Robinson two with three years probation for minimal involvement. The group was linked to a 48 count indictment over 1972–1975 at a Dorchester County day care center, with $92 000 traced to the defendants and more than $300 000 unaccounted for. Eleven DeLee family members appeared on payroll 1970–1975, totaling $129 831, 41 percent of payroll and 29 percent of disbursements of the Dorchester County Educational Project Inc Program.
