Eight years ago Clemson professor predicted Aiken County would run about 70 percent of its preweevil cotton yield. Latest figures show 27,744 bales ginned this year with expectations near 29,000 and an average around 30,000 as prices rise and farmers grow food at home. Local growers like Peesom Somdn and Toole tout live-at-home farming and increased cash crops peanuts peaches and poultry to offset cotton declines.

Braxton B Williams of Norway Orangeburg County was arrested Tuesday at Sheriff Bovara's request on a warrant charging issuing worthless checks. He allegedly passed a $190 check to J McNair, president of Farmers and Merchants Bank of Aiken, and a $75 check to Chief Jesse Greorge in a business deal, with another $15 check claimed by K D Bell former coroner.
Nick Alvanos reported to have his Plaza Restaurant raided by city police and Sheriff Howard on two occasions Saturday night and Sunday morning. Liquor found in both raids. Alvanos fined $50 in mayor's court with a federal charge expected.
Mr and Mrs Josef Hofmann and daughter Miss Josefa arrived in Aiken on Friday and will occupy their winter home Fermata. Miss Hofmann has studied art in Paris for the past two years after spending summers in Switzerland.

Witnesses say the sheriff and his men fired after Williamson, who was killed while fleeing. an inquest examined the body as authorities prepare to answer in General Sessions Court.

AMURL A Woodward 89 a Confederate veteran died Friday night at his home near Aiken after a paralysis illness. Survived by widow Caroline Cushman Woodward four sons and one daughter and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral held Saturday at Millbrook Baptist church with burial in church cemetery.
