Video poker battle continues in Aiken County zoning fight

Aiken County Planning Commission will review a partial barrier ordinance after Aiken County Council tabled second reading by 7 to 2, adding a 150 foot setback. Councilman Randall's amendment passed unanimously. The county and nearby North Augusta seek zoning limits as video poker returns after the state Supreme Court ruling that counties cannot ban the games.

Bill would lift video poker payoff bans in counties

ROCK HILL AP Pro proposed legislation could clear the way for 12 counties to restore voter sanctioned bans on video poker payoffs. State Sen Wes Hayes plans to introduce the bill on Jan 14 opening day of the 1997 legislative session in Columbia. The bill would remove legal problems that let the state Supreme Court set aside the 1994 county bylaw and would shift violations of state rules from criminal to civil penalties.
