Braves Trade Mercker for Borowski and Stewart in multi‑team deal
The Braves send Mercker after a 1996 payroll target and add prospects in a three‑part trade. Atlanta replaces him with Jason Schmidt in the No. 5 starter slot while acquiring Joe Borowski and Richard Stewart. Orioles GM Pat Gillick says Kent Chiang fits as a lefty in the rotation as Schmidt shines in Richmond before promotion.

Tyson Fight Not Pretty on Fox Debut
Fox debut of Friday Night Fights featuring Tyson versus Mathis Jr. drew ratings but failed to thrill viewers. Announcer slipups and kludgy interview promos marred the telecast, with analysts Czyz and O Grady offering the night’s few bright moments. John Madden’s taped Tyson chat stood out amid a largely tepid prime time boxing package.
