New Ellenton residents face back charges over fire tax cans

In New Ellenton the split between the city and the water commission led to arrears notices for fire protection and sanitation fees. The town began reclaiming garbage cans from residents and businesses via BFI Services, charging for each can used. Mayor Paul Parker says about 800 cans are needed and last month the town paid roughly 8,000 in can fees. Council members note many on the list are only three months late, while others are current. The billing shift stems from the water commission's new fee for services and separate town billing. Residents seeking cans will see details on page 7A.
