Shoppers crowded stores and malls over the weekend after weeks of browsing. Retailers expect a strong final week to boost holiday sales, with jewelry, home finishing and toys among top sellers as discounts attract customers. Dayton Hudson Corp. spokeswoman Gail Dorn notes the last weeks are crucial and the season is picking up.

A large crowd braved frigid air and sleet as the Aiken Jaycees Christmas Parade rolled Sunday afternoon led by the Aiken Public Safety Bike Patrol. Grand marshal Dr Gene Redd rode an antique car with Aiken officials aboard while floats from Graniteville First Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Middlers vied for honors.
Aaron Letsinger grew up assisting her mother with child care and now volunteers across Jackson. She studies medical office work at Aiken Technical School and serves with Jackson First Alert Responders, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Jackson Fire Department, and the Southeastern Hobby Fair Craft Show committee. She has assisted EMTs in Jackson for 20 years.
Ms Letsinger helped save a man who collapsed from a heart attack after falling from a boat into Savannah River. Other fishermen pulled him to shore and to a supermarket where responders revived him, aided by cold water. She and rescue members earned the Police Blue Knight Hall of Fame Award.
Secretary of Energy Federico Pena visits the Aiken area to meet CNTA supporters and inspect SRS facilities including the Defense Waste Processing Facility and tritium plants. He attends a science center ceremony, meets officials, and discusses SRS mission and possible 1998 policy outcomes affecting jobs and regional projects.
Cold weather could not dim a community moment as Habitat for Humanity dedicated two new houses in Aiken on the same day with City of Aiken partnership. Homes at 320 Edgefield Ave and 315 Union St were built by St Johns United Methodist Church and St Thaddeus Episcopal Church, with another project planned for Kennedy Colony. Habitat director Susan French noted the unusual simultaneity allowed immediate move ins. The double dedication coincided with the Aiken Christmas parade as sleet fell.
