A juror in Gov. Edwin Edwards racketeering case showed a thumbs-down gesture to TV cameras prompting defense to seek removal. Judge Marcel Livan said he would hear arguments Monday as the jury began the fourth day of deliberations after quitting Saturday without a verdict.
Congressional negotiators approved a costly long term farm policy aimed at keeping farmers afloat until competitiveness returns and American agriculture regains footing. The measure now goes to the House and Senate for final endorsement before reaching the White House for a possible signature by President Reagan.

After months of speculation a 500000 square foot shopping mall will rise on a 103 acre site on Aiken South side fronting Whiskey Road near Woodside Plantation. Zamias Development of Johnstown Pa will build the mall with groundbreaking in spring and completion planned for 1987.
On December 19, 1835 the South Carolina General Assembly passed Act 2669 to incorporate towns and societies, amend charters, and charter diverse groups including the Iron Steam Boat Company and Pendleton Jockey Club. It also created the town of Hamburg and provided housing provisions for Aiken residents.

Ohio grand jury indicted five including Aiken County polo investor Ron Ewton on 40 counts of aiding and abetting willful misapplication of funds, 12 counts of theft by deception and four counts of obstruction of justice. The case ties to the Cincinnati Home State Savings Bank collapse and related securities offenses.
