The Aiken Jaycees sponsor a Christmas Shopping Tour to buy clothes and gifts for needy children at Wal-Mart on Saturday. The drive, led by Ray Blanks, closes Friday, with donations to the Aiken Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour P O Box 707. The Salvation Army targets 33000 for food checks toys gifts and year round programs via mail appeals and kettles. Local industries contributed 12000 to Valley Empty Stocking Fund last year.

South Carolina Grants SRP Five Year Path to Meet Water Rules
South Carolina DHEC issues a 63 permit order for the Savannah River Plant allowing up to five years to meet state water standards. The order, covering non radioactive discharges, excludes L and R reactors but covers three operating reactors. SRP will conduct nine month water studies and may amend the order within a year. Temperature discharges of 180 F from reactors total about 250 million gallons daily, exceeding the 90 F limit and not to raise stream temp more than 5 F.

Seventeen Go To Hodel Seeking Reactor For SRP
A seventeen member state and county delegation planned to meet U S Energy Secretary Donald Hodel in Washington to urge the Savannah River Plant be chosen for a new plutonium production reactor. The project could create about 4 000 construction jobs and 2 000 permanent jobs for Aiken County with an estimated cost of 3 000 000 000 to 6 000 000 000 dollars not operational until the 1990s. The State Development Board funds the trip and resolutions from local governments in Aiken and Richmond counties were to be presented.

Robert Wayne Williams aged 31, a convicted robber who shot Willie Kelly in 1979, was executed at Angola State Prison. He entered the death chamber at 1:01 a.m. and died 14 minutes later after five electric shocks. The Supreme Court had refused to stay his execution.
